Gifted

To give a part of yourself unknown to most: your perspective, your view of others. How you see the ones you love, how you interpret their presence in your life. Gifted is a lifelong project, marked by a process of creating and connecting.

I saw her glancing toward it whenever she graced my studio. A gentle holding within her eyes, a gentleness that it deserved. The colors, reminiscent of her sculptures: yellows and light watery blues, natural forms, tendrils of harmony and peace. She needed to have it.

When I gave it to her, she told me it felt like god, that she could see the curves of women within it, cracking open the world and creating it from itself.

A gift made in retrospect. As my grandfather lay dying, his son searched his belongings for remnants of his life: passwords to bank accounts, information on bills, medical documents, etc. In the stacks of folders and files, he found a small unassuming notebook containing times. The date of the day, the time the sun rose, and the time the sun set. For years, every day, my grandfather was a tracker. A man of science and of the stars. A man obsessed with the rotation of the Earth, unaware our world stopped spinning when he left us.

On the day he died, I sat in my studio and painted the sun elongated. It was my hope that I could stretch it out, and delay his sunshine from ever having to set at all
